A Brief history of Nagashi Shukokai Karate Club.

· Sensei Derek Willoughby 5th Dan, founded the Nagashi Shukokai Karate Club in 1994 with the assistance of Mark Conlon 5th Dan Shukokai.

· Derek has many years experience in karate, having started in 1985, and has represented England and Great Britain internationally in both kumite and kata. His most prestigious being part of the team that came second in the 5 Nations Championships in Germany 1997.

· His first instructor was Sensei Rob Milner 4th Dan. Derek achieved his 1st Dan under Sensei Neil Barlow 3rd Dan in 1992.

· Having retired from active karate competition after a number of very successful years, in which he amassed many trophies, Sensei Willoughby now concentrates on coaching, refereeing, and instruction in courses and gradings.

· He has trained students up to World Championship level. His most recent success being Jasmine Macauley, who became World Kata Champion in 2004 at an International event in Leuwarden in Holland. Also that same year Richard Black, who became World Kata Champion in Kerry, Ireland.

· Derek is the former Chief Kata Instructor and Chief Kumite Referee for the Northern Karate Union National Squad. He is also the former Chief Referee to the World Martial Aarts Council. He is currently the Chief Instructor to Nagashi Shukokai Karate.

· The style of karate practised at the club is Shukokai, which was founded by the late Japanese Master Chojiro Tani. It is based on a person walking and so places great emphasis on relaxation and naturalness. Sadly Master Tani passed away in January 1998.

· The name Nagashi translates to flowing movements and, with this in mind we look forward to a successful future with the current squad of students proving diligent and hard working. We are also working toward a positive attitude to be successful in karate and the community.
